I’m Dr Antony Lighten, a fertility specialist based in Sydney, with over 30 years of experience in reproductive medicine.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of couples achieve their dream of having a child. Supporting individuals and families on their fertility journeys has been the most rewarding part of my work, and it continues to inspire everything I do.
My journey in medicine began at the University of Cambridge, where I completed my medical degree. Studying at Cambridge provided not only a world-class education but also an environment that fostered critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to excellence. Surrounded by some of the brightest minds in medicine and science, I gained a deep understanding of the foundations of medicine and developed the skills to approach complex challenges with innovation and rigour.
After Cambridge, I pursued a PhD at Imperial College London, focusing on preimplantation genetic development. My research examined the role of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) in early embryo development and contributed valuable insights into improving embryo viability during fertility treatments. Imperial’s emphasis on cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration allowed me to explore new frontiers in reproductive medicine, culminating in the "Most Promising Young Scientist" award from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). This experience reinforced my passion for using science to improve patient outcomes.
I later specialised in reproductive medicine at the Oxford Fertility Unit, part of Oxford University. Training at Oxford provided unparalleled access to leaders in the field, as well as exposure to advanced reproductive technologies and innovative practices. The University’s reputation for academic excellence and its emphasis on evidence-based medicine shaped my approach to patient care, ensuring that I deliver treatments informed by the latest research and best practices.
The opportunities to study and train at these prestigious institutions not only honed my technical expertise but also instilled a lifelong commitment to learning and excellence. The networks and collaborations I developed during this time continue to inform my practice, enabling me to provide patients with the most advanced and effective fertility treatments available.
Since relocating to Sydney, I’ve focused on supporting patients while also building world-class facilities to advance fertility care. I founded Bond Day Hospital, a fully licensed day surgery facility equipped with the latest technology and designed to provide a comprehensive range of medical and surgical procedures. Bond Day Hospital offers a supportive and comfortable environment where patients can access exceptional care delivered by a highly experienced team of specialists.
I also established Minerva Fertility, a fertility centre that embodies my vision of combining personalised care with the latest advancements in reproductive medicine. At Minerva Fertility, I’ve brought together a team of highly experienced doctors and scientists who share my passion for excellence. Together, we’ve created a collaborative environment where each patient’s journey is unique, and their care is tailored to their specific needs.
By integrating cutting-edge science with a compassionate approach, I’ve helped thousands of couples achieve their dreams of parenthood. My philosophy has always been to place the patient at the centre of everything we do. Fertility treatment can be an emotional and challenging journey, and I am committed to ensuring every patient feels supported, informed, and empowered throughout the process.
Earlier in my career, I regularly presented my research at international conferences, contributing to advancements in the global fertility community. While my focus has since shifted towards clinical practice and leading my team, the principles of innovation and scientific rigour remain at the core of my work.
Helping people grow their families is not just a career—it’s my life’s work and a privilege. I am deeply committed to advancing fertility care and making the dream of parenthood a reality for as many people as possible.
